Who you are matters
- Describe where you come from
- In my heart, I come from a small suburb north of New Delhi. This 23 sq mi radius is where my grandparents sought refuge after the 1947 partition of India. It's where my parents grew up, met, and fell in love. This is where a lot of my personal values, traditions, and culture comes from.
- My identity comes from my upbringing in Dubai - not the Dubai you'd see on Instagram today, but the Dubai from 2003 - 2016. The homey, developing, cultural melting pot in the Middle East that raised my best friends and I.
- I've experienced more personal growth than I ever thought I would've when I moved to LA by myself 4 years ago. I will forever value my experience in this city, and I'd like to say a part of me comes from here too.
(The Dubai Marina in 2003) - Tell me where you're going
- Ideally, New York or Nowhere.
- Tell me how you plan to get there
- I'll finish up working at the firm I'm working at right now until I get bored of it. Then I'll apply to jobs in New York and live in a big beautiful apartment with all of my best friends and make lots of money & eat lots of omakase.
- How are you LIKE your parents
- My dad and I are one person in two bodies. If he's thinking something, I'm probably thinking it too. We share the same preferences, ideas, and habits. We even look alike. Although, he does wake up at 5AM everyday to play tennis. I like to go to bed around that hour.
- My mom is highly emotional & extremely fierce, protective, and caring. She's the most loving, passionate and hard working human being I know. Up until I was 16, I don't think I shared a single resemblance with her. As I get older, I find myself inheriting the warmth, empathy, and compassion she has. I also find myself inheriting her shopping addiction.
- How are you UNLIKE your parents
- My parents have stronger character, grit, and intelligence than I do. They had to overcome far greater obstacles & hardships at my age than I probably will have to in my entire lifetime. I admire both of them immensely for their wisdom and determination.
- Who, other than a relative, serves as a model for you of someone who lives life with great passion and personal responsibility?
- My best friend, Julia. She has more integrity in her pinky toe than most people do in their entire bodies. I admire her authenticity & caring nature.
- My other best friends, Yalcin & Jad. The funniest people in the world. Being in their presence is an immediate serotonin boost.
- Melanie Masarin, the founder of Ghia. I had the chance to meet her recently when the firm I work for onboarded her company as a client. She came to the US as an international student like I did and she's everything I want to be when I'm older. The most elegant, business-savvy, humble, and intellectually curious person I've met.
- Connecting with the ANIMAL WORLD: What wild animal do you feel a special connection with, and why?
- A lioness. The lion rules the jungle and the lioness rules the lion. It's a beautiful dynamic.
- Connecting with the NATURE KINGDOMS: Describe a significant childhood encounter with a tree or plant.
- My mom has a garden of lovely Aloe Vera plants in our backyard. The first time I burnt myself with a hair straightener at age 13, I was on the verge of tears when my mom plucked one of the aloe leaves out. I thought the texture of the sap inside the leaf was repulsive and didn't want to go anywhere near it. After 15 minutes of my mom being VERY insistent, I was bewildered when I placed the leaf on my skin and I instantly stopped feeling any pain. Every time I've gotten burnt since, I've thought about this instance.

Yess! Make lots of money and eat lots of omakase, couldn't agree more! Similarly, I think I've experienced more personal growth when moving to LA.
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool that you grew up in Dubai. I would love to understand more of the differences in the Dubai you describe from 2003-2016, to the current one we see through social media.
ReplyDeleteThat must’ve been such a culture shock moving to LA alone! And I’m with you girl, NY or nowhere!!
Also, an Aloe Vera garden sounds amazing, my mom is a huge holistic health enthusiast and would die to have that in our backyard!!
Moving to a big city alone is scary, especially from across the world! Congratulations on your journey finding your path in LA. I would love to know more about the Dubai you experienced, rather than the one I am educated on based off of social media.
ReplyDeleteI like your choice in the Lion, that definitely aligns with your Leo moon a bit! Also sounds representative of the character traits you described in your mother!
What an amazing trifecta of the places you come from! I completely resonate with the blurb about LA, I think moving far away for college alone really forces you to grow in ways you would never expect. Such a challenging yet rewarding experience. I love LA for the same reason!
ReplyDeleteIts New York or nowhere for me too. Its too exciting of a place to not move to at least once in your life.
